Grab your golf clubs and take off for an exciting day on the greens. Even if you're not bumpins the pros off the circuit, there are several places in the area to get in a great game of golf while enjoying some beautiful scenery.
Highlands/Cashiers.Lake Toxaway Area
Lake Toxaway
18 miles west from Brevard on U.S. 64. Bordering the popular Lake Toxaway, the course offers some of the more challenging play of any of the courses in the area. Visitors accompanied by club members are welcome, as are guests at the Greystone Inn and summer residents who are renting homes from club members. The course closes in late October and opens again in April.
Lake Toxaway is a mountain resort on Highway 64 between Highlands and Brevard. Asheville is approximately 45 miles north. The 5,000 acre development has plans for 1,250 housing units. Homes range in price from $200,000 to $3 million. Homesites can be purchased at prices ranging from $50,000 up to $500,000. Maintenance-free homes are offered at prices ranging from $300,000 up to $350,000.
The 18-hole golf course was designed by Joe Lee. Other activities include tennis courts, a swimming pool and dining at the clubhouse. One of the primary attractions of Lake Toxaway is the lake, offering fourteen miles of shoreline. Water sports such as swimming, sailing, water-skiing and fishing are excellent.
Membership in the private club is $12,500 for full-golf. Annual dues for a full-golf membership are $3,000.
Sapphire Lakes .....

Sapphire Lakes, a private golf and country community is a non-equity club that began in 1983 under the direction of Darnall W. Boyd. ..Sapphire Lakes Country Club is a very challenging and beautiful private club in the spectacular Western North Carolina Mountains. Golf Course architect, Tom Jackson, created a real gem to play for either the low handicap player or a beginning golfer.
Sapphire Lakes encompasses an impeccably kept, top-ranked, 18 hole championship golf course, glistening lake, fast dry tennis courts and woods bursting with mountain laurel.
Sapphire Mountain Golf Club
Just beyond Lake Toxaway is Sapphire Valley, which is also a popular ski resort. At Sapphire Mountain Golf Club, golfers cross mountain streams on native stone bridges throughout the course and panoramic views abound.
The club is near Sapphire Valley and throughout the 6,300-yard, par-70 course are many hills golfers must overcome. Four lakes and two streams add additional challenge of the course, which is open to the general public.
Highlands Country Club
Highlands Country Club is nestled in the unique Blue Ridge Mountains. The development is approximately 400 acres with 320 units planned. Home prices begin at $175,000 and range up to $1.4 million. A variety of homesites with varying views can be purchased here at prices ranging from $45,000 to $475,000.
The 18-hole golf course was designed by Donald Ross. In addition to golf, residents can enjoy tennis, swimming and trout fishing. An equity membership is currently $31,850 plus $3,200 in annual dues.
Highlands Falls Country Club

Highlands Falls Country Club is a private residential golf and tennis community located two miles from Highlands. The development is approximately 550 acres. A total of 340 units are planned for the development. Home and villa prices begin at $160,000. Homesite prices begin at approximately $30,000 and go up to $185,000.
The 18-hole golf course was designed by Joe Lee. Other amenities include a clubhouse with formal dining and grill. A heated swimming pool, three Har-tru tennis courts, fishing and a variety of social functions are also available.
Equity memberships are $31,000 and dues are $3,400.
Cashiers Wade Hampton
Wade Hampton is located in the beautiful mountains of Cashiers. Only 300 residences are planned for the 711 acre development. Homesites range in price from $75,000 up to $500,000. Prices for single family homes begin at $300,000 and range up to over $1 million.
Tom Fazio designed the golf course at Wade Hampton. The clubhouse has a pro shop, dining rooms, locker rooms and a grill room. A full-golf membership is $45,000 with annual dues of $5,500.

Brevard Area
Glen Cannon
One of Brevard's more established golf courses is Glen Cannon Country Club, serving the community for over 16 years Located just three miles from town, the private club offers 6,270 yards in the 18- hole course, which includes beautiful panoramic views and a spectacular waterfall. Golfers who live outside a 50 mile radius of Brevard may play on a per day basis.
Sherwood Forest
Several potential "booby traps" challenge golfers at Sherwood Forest, located eight miles south of Brevard on U.S. 276. With a river running throughout the course, golfers must be careful or their ball will get a surprise free wash. The executive course at Sherwood Forest is open to visitors all year long, weather permitting, and offers golf with no set starting times.
Deerwood
Just outside of Brevard is Deerwoode, a golf and fitness center which offers driving range and newly opened 9-hole golf course.
Situated upon the banks of the French Broad River, this challenging course was formerly part of a summer camp. The course was inactive for several years, but work on the greens has been completed and this year it is open to the public. Deerwoode also offers a driving range for golfers who just wish to practice their swing.
Connestee Falls
Located about seven miles south of Brevard on U.S.276. This club offers some of the best rolling fairways and greens in the area and is open to residents and their guests.

Hendersonville Area
Champion Hills
Champion Hills, a 546 acre property, is located in western North Carolina and lies less than five miles from both downtown Hendersonville and Flat Rock. The development will have approximately 400 units at build-out.
Single family homesites range from $50,000 to $300,000. Single family homes range in price from $260,000 up to $2,500,000. Maintenance-free homes range from $225,000 to $400,000.
Tom Fazio designed the 6,719 yard championship golf course. Clubhouse facilities offer a heated swimming pool, dining and areas for social activities. All-weather tennis courts are available for members' use.
Full equity membership is $50,000. Annual dues are

Cummings Cove Golf Course
The award-winning 18 hole, par 71 Cummings Cove 6,400 yard course has elevated tees, tree-lined fairways, lakes, streams and incredible mountain views. Private club atmosphere and service are available to visiting golfers, daily play, groups and tournaments. The clubhouse includes golf shop, restaurant and lounge; located 8 miles from Hendersonville.

Etowah Valley
Although not in Transylvania County, another fine course open to visitors is Etowah Valley Golf Club. The Henderson County course is nine miles east of Brevard on U.S. 64.
The course is open to the general public. Tee times are required, and reservations may be made no more than two days in advance.
French Broad Golf Center
This is one of the area's newest golf courses and is located near the airport on N.C.280.
It's an 18-hole, championship course, and is open to the general publlc. Facilities include a new clubhouse and a restaurant.

Some area golf courses close during the winter months, but most stay open, weather permitting.
